How sheep shaped the landscape and culture of Wales and beyond. Human civilization was not just created by humans: we had the help of many creatures, foremost among them sheep. From Argentina to Australia and from Mesopotamia to Mongolia, just about every country with hills and meadows has adopted and then developed sheep farming as a way of living. Sheeplands outlines the journeys taken by some of these sheep as they voyaged across the world, both by themselves and with human shepherds, from the earliest human settlements to the present day. Along the way, Alan Marshall paints vivid portraits of the roles sheep have played in the development of the modern world, in times of peace and war, and describes how sheeplands might continue to influence Wales and the wider world in future years.

On initially becoming aware of its topic, a cinemagoer might be forgiven for thinking this would take a more pedestrian stance – and that same cinemagoer would be wrong. The documentary is one of the most mesmerising pieces of film I have seen in some time. It is beyond that – Barry is a magician. A teller of tales. A weaver of folklore. And in observing her creative genius, Director Cara Holmes has fashioned a completely spellbinding story.

Cara Holmes' enchanting and beguiling documentary is inspired by no-nonsense artist, shepherd and farmer Orla Barry and her 2019 book Shaved Rapunzel, Scheherazade & the Shearing Ram from Arcady, a collection of her performance text and written works exploring the different worlds of being an artist and a shepherd after she returns to Ireland to take over the family farm and the running of a flock of pedigree Lleyn sheep. Narrated by Barry, the film bursts with the candid observations and reflections of this self-confessed bovine-obsessive as she goes about the arduous day-to-day work of farming while continuing to make art.
