Showcase - [Showcase] Pre-ML Hardcore Master Mode Rod of Discord Farm (2024)

I’ve just finished AFKing and got four Rods of Discord in three hours with no deaths in my RoD farm, so I’d thought I’d briefly post it here.

Features

• 4 Rods of Discord in 3 hours (in Master Mode).
• Works on Hardcore (though see note below).
• No Macros required.
• Infinite food (Apple Pie).
• Optional in-built Sell Point.

Core Mechanics

• In an artificial hallow biome (≥ 125 blocks) a Slime Mount (Slimy Saddle or Gelatinous Pillion) keeps the player moving (credit: starman2995). (Chaos Elementals won’t spawn with background walls or while the player is stationary.)
• A Stardust Dragon (technically pre-ML ) kills mobs.
• Conveyors, which take their spawn information from the block immediately beneath (not sure where I read this, but it works) carry the loot to the middle.
• Mob-free one-second Dart Trap battery wakes up (Hallowed) Mimics.

Optional Features

• Escape Teleporters rescue* players from Hallowed Mimics (credit: Khaios).
• Artificial Jungle and Water Candle boosts spawn rate.
• Gnome increases luck, I believe.
• Bast Statue, Heart Lantern, Campfires, and perpetual Honey massively boost life regeneration.

Notes on Hardcore Viability and Loadout

• As before, I AFKed for three hours on Master Mode with no deaths. However:
• You will get hit by Hallowed Mimics and *sometimes they will teleport up with you. The Slime Mount will keep you bouncing on it while the Dragon kills it.
  • Do not wear a Shield otherwise you will not be knocked to safety.
• To increase survivability:
  • Add Bast Statues and, crucially, Hallowed Mimic banners, which are given after only 25 kills. (To cover surface and cavern, you will need 2.)
  • Optimise your [summoner] build for Dodge Chance. This means Brain of Confusion, Black Belt, Cross Necklace, and/or Hallowed Armor.
  • The Terrarian Offices of Walkman Industries™ accept no responsibility for lost characters.

Even as I write these words it’s gone safely for a fourth hour. (Pro Tip: use multiplayer, it keeps running behind windows.)

You can make the farm 100% death proof by putting the player in a fall damage invincibility machine. If you want a marginal increase in rate you can teleport all the enemies into a centralised location so the dragon can continuously kill the enemies in one spot. For a larger increase in rates you can use a 2 player setup - one player immediately teleporting the enemies away and the other killing them. Ofc if your using like 6 players the maximum spawn rate can be huge.

Also I haven't really got any proof of this but an aether biome seems to increase spawn rates- might be worth a test.

Oh also the best food source in the game is bacon!!

For science, I did a comparison of the farm you describe, depicted above, and my original. My original was about 0.375 Chaos Elementals per minute slower — perhaps solely because of the following fact: without the block bridge, and with a healthy lake (≥ 10 tiles) of lava below, the Hallowed Mimic’s AI stopped it from reaching me. I was never teleported out. More time in the farm is surely part of the higher rate.

Also note well the fact (checked in the bestiaries across multiple worlds) that the drop rate in Expert Mode is no different from in Master Mode, so it makes more sense to farm there.

Woah do you have a mod that shows mobs per minute? Cus that's awesome. My idea for a teleporter farm is slightly different.

Idk how much difference it will make

For this design I had the enemies teleport under you but from 5 separate teleporters. Instead of using pressure plates I also used a dummy engine. This means that even bats are reliably teleported. The hoik system that goes up instead of across is to minimise the time spent by an enemy in a teleport zone. This basically stops teleport backs nearly completely. This also teleports docile mimics as well so no need to trigger them with dart traps at all. With a stardust dragon and stardust armour, and the hallow mimic banner, the mimics don't even need to be worried about as they are killed too fast for them to attack you. And if they do attack you they won't again until your health has fully replenished. I tested this farm on 10x spawn rate for about 5 minutes and I didn't take any damage- thats with the banner.

Oooo and I've always wanted to make a lime kelp farm as it has the interesting challenge of growing under water which is always more interesting to design a farm around. Tis actually not so easy as you don't want to lag out everything with 1000s of liquid calculations lol.

so, my farm is structured like this. i use a portal gun for movement simulation, its pretty cool. but not gained a rod yet.
