The American Headache Society is pleased to announce “Launchpad to Headache Essentials,” a new pre-course at The Scottsdale Headache Symposium. A task force comprised of leadership from the "Headache 101," "The Bridge" and "First Contact" programs created Launchpad to provide introductory-level education to physicians and non-physicians. Launchpad’s unique features include:
- Content is designed for all interested learners
- A team of a physician and a non-physician will present each topic together
- Presentations emphasize current evidence base, incorporating case-based examples

Preventive Migraine Management
9:30 AM - 10:05 AM
Presentation Description
This lecture is designed to enhance knowledge around preventative treatment of migraine. After understanding the goals of therapy, the lecture content will enhance assessment and decision-making strategies as to when preventative treatment is required or should be considered, as well as how to choose appropriate therapies. The lecture will review effective therapeutic options and which therapies to choose based on scientific evidence and clinical presentation. In addition to pharmacological options, lifestyle modification strategies and nutraceutical options will be discussed, along with available non-pharmacologic devices. Response to therapy and determining effectiveness of preventative treatment will be reviewed. Learning will be summarized through discussion of case presentations

Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgias
12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
Presentation Description
The trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias are a collection of several headache disorders (hemicrania continua, cluster headache, paroxysmal hemicrania, SUNCT, and SUNA) with similar features that differ in timing and frequency. Cluster headache is uncommon (1 in 1000) while the rest of the headaches are rare (1 in 10,000 or less). The diagnoses are based on clinical criteria that include unilateral pain with ipsilateral autonomic features (such as eye watering and nasal congestion). The cause of these headaches is unclear but is thought to involve the trigeminal pain system, the facial autonomic pathway, and the hypothalamus. The headaches also differ in their treatment. For cluster headache, the first-line treatments are oxygen, sumatriptan injections, prednisone, and verapamil. For “hemicrania” headaches (hemicrania continua and paroxysmal hemicrania), indomethacin is so effective that it is included in the official criteria of these headaches. For SUNCT and SUNA, the headaches are so brief that acute treatments take too long and the first-line preventive is lamotrigine.
